About

Why Lit Carnivale? (pronounced Carn-E-Vale)

Lit, short for literature is a broad term; it means more than simply books. Literature at its most basic is a collection of words printed (or shared) for distribution about a specific subject. It’s not all about Shakespeare or Jane Austen, but it can be. In an age where the term book can be applied to various mediums (printed, digital, audio and more) and the merit of genres are now placed in the hands of consumers (not a governing body), the word Lit seems to suit the purpose and goal of this endeavor perfectly.

Carnivale, a smash-up of the words carnival and vale, is something special indeed. Carnivals evoke a sense of wonder, pleasure, or fun, and even (dare I say) magic. Carnival is also a celebration of life, culture (and all that comes with it), and the pursuit of bliss. We want this event to be all that and more for book lovers and the book industry. We want our directory to help others find their local literary bliss.

Veil (though a different spelling) is a translucent material worn over the face for concealment or protection. In our minds, books are the veil against ignorance and a lack of imagination. Vale is a word of many meanings. Vale is the valley; or is it the whole world (mortal existence as we know it)? The Vale is whatever each reader needs it to be. It could be their valley, it could be a world of books, it could be the spread of literacy to every man, woman, and child. The Vale is wherever you let our literary celebration take you.
